Pros: Full ski season at Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, and Norquay. Frozen Lake Louise becomes a magical outdoor skating rink, and January brings the SnowDays festival and the Ice Magic ice-carving competition. Fewer international tourists than the holidays.
Alternatively, close by, in the Okanagan, you can enjoy Silver Star, Big White and Baldy all within quite close distance.
Cons: It’s cold, and daylight is short. Many high-alpine trails and the Moraine Lake area are inaccessible.
Best place in Canada this month: Mont-Tremblant, Québec — the quintessential eastern ski village, all twinkling lights, ski-in/ski-out charm, and joie de vivre in the snow.

Cons: Peak cold snaps still happen; summer sights remain closed.
Best place in Canada this month: Ottawa, Ontario — Winterlude, where you can skate the Rideau Canal, the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink, then warm up with a BeaverTail.
March
Rockies weather: Warming to around 1–3°C by day — and, surprisingly, often Banff’s snowiest month.
Pros: Arguably the best skiing of the year: deep snow, longer days, and softer temperatures. Great value before the summer rush.
Cons: It’s still firmly winter for lakes and hiking; conditions can swing from powder to slush.
Best place in Canada this month: Whistler, BC — spring skiing bliss: bluebird laps up top, patio après down below, and some of the best snow in the country still going strong.

Rockies weather: The “secret” shoulder month. Highs 2–10°C; snow up high, thaw down low.
Pros: Ski resorts are often still open early in the month, but rates drop and crowds thin dramatically — a hidden gem for value.
Cons: A muddy in-between: many hikes are still snowy or closed, lakes are still frozen (and not photogenic mid-melt), and some seasonal businesses haven’t reopened.
Best place in Canada this month: Vancouver, BC — cherry blossom season, when tens of thousands of trees turn whole neighbourhoods pink. Mild, walkable, and gorgeous.

May
Rockies weather: Spring arrives. Highs around 14°C; the valleys green up and the lakes begin their famous thaw.
Pros: One of the best months overall — pleasant weather, waterfalls at full roar from snowmelt, wildlife active, and summer crowds haven’t hit. The Lake Louise lakeshore shuttle starts (around May 15). Great value.
Cons: Higher-elevation trails are still snowbound, and Moraine Lake Road doesn’t open to shuttles until June 1. Lakes may not be fully “that blue” until late May/June.
Best place in Canada this month: Victoria & Vancouver Island, BC — Butchart Gardens in full spring bloom, whale-watching season kicking off, and the mildest corner of the country.
June
Rockies weather: Long days (light past 10 pm), highs around 18°C, lakes hitting peak turquoise.
Pros: Everything wakes up — Moraine Lake Road opens June 1 (shuttle/tour access only), lakes glow, wildflowers begin, and the days are gloriously long. Peak season starts mid-month but early June is a sweet spot.
Cons: Afternoon thundershowers are common; the highest passes may still hold snow early on. Bugs appear near water.
